General building management system (GBMS) is one of several systems installed at the Airport designed to assist operation personnel in operating and maintaining the terminal building, controlling plant and equipment, managing energy consumption, controlling comfort, identifying faults, and maintaining assets in the terminal building.

It monitors more than 15,000 I/O points and provides maintenance management for LV electrical and other systems to ensure the terminal building is fully available for public usage, 24 hours a day and all year round

VL Automation Limited (VL)’s responsibility on Airport GBMS & SCADA System included system configuration, Human Machine Interface and control logic development, testing & commissioning as well as training. VL is a subcontractor to the main control contractor Control Systems International (CSI) of Kansas, USA.

Project Details

Airport GBMS and SCADA System

The UCOS system utilizes standard hardware, standard PC and PLC I/O, providing complete solution for process control and graphical man-machine interface. The operator workstation with graphical interface provides the real-time data and field events. Operators are alerted to all abnormal conditions such as emergency shutdown. Alarms and field data are stored in SQL database for further analysis.

Challenge + Solution

Scalable System – The Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA) at Chek Lap Kok continues to see growth in passenger volume and flight since its opening in 1998. The HKIA has since added Terminal 2 (T2), North Satellite Concourse (NSC) and is building the Midfield Concourse (MFC) to complement the existing Terminal 1 (T1). Inevitably, the Airport GBMS and SCADA systems have to be expanded to address the ever expanding airport. Because UCOS is fully scalable at every level, it is able to cater for this expansion with ease.

Report By Exception – Accurate information and fast response time is important to maintain a smooth operation at the Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA). The Airport GBMS and SCADA systems monitor and control a large number of device and equipment. The UCOS system uses report-by-exception methodology to relay data and command between workstations and field control units and vice versa. This ensures that the most up to date information are delivered promptly to airport operations.
